How Often Should You Get Your Hull Cleaned in Victoria?
The honest answer depends on your boat, the season, and where you keep it. Here's a practical schedule based on what we actually see in the water.
People ask me this all the time and the honest answer is: it depends. But I can give you a realistic guideline based on what I see every day in Victoria harbours.
Summer (May - October)
Every 4-6 weeks. Growth is fast in warm water. A boat that was clean in June can have serious barnacle coverage by August if you skip a cleaning. This is not an exaggeration — I've seen it plenty of times.
If your boat sits in a warmer, sheltered spot (like parts of Oak Bay or Brentwood Bay), lean toward every 4 weeks.
Winter (November - April)
Every 8-12 weeks. Growth slows way down in cold water. You still get some algae and slime but barnacle growth drops off a lot. A winter cleaning every couple months is usually fine.
Factors that change things
Older antifouling paint means faster growth. If your paint is thin, you'll need more frequent cleanings.
Boats that don't move grow faster. If your boat sits for weeks without running, expect more fouling than one that goes out every weekend.
Location matters. Some marinas have warmer water, more nutrients, or more current — all of which affect growth rates. Sidney and Oak Bay tend to get more growth than some other spots.
The real cost of skipping cleanings
Heavy barnacle growth means burning more fuel, lower top speed, and potential damage to your antifouling paint when it finally does get cleaned. Regular light cleanings are easier on your paint and cheaper in the long run than one big cleanup a year.
