Regattas in Victoria: The Local Racing Scene

Victoria has a solid sailing race scene. Here's a quick rundown of the major regattas and events for racers and spectators.

Victoria's racing scene is one of the best on the west coast. The combination of challenging currents, variable winds, and beautiful scenery makes it a fantastic place to race — or watch races.

The big ones

Swiftsure International Yacht Race is the flagship event. Held every May long weekend out of Victoria Harbour. Multiple courses ranging from a short 35-nautical-mile race to the full Swiftsure bank course. Hundreds of boats, big crowds on the waterfront. It's a Victoria tradition.

Round Saltspring Island Race usually happens in June. Exactly what it sounds like — a full circumnavigation of Saltspring. Tidal strategy is everything.

The Van Isle 360 is a multi-day race around Vancouver Island. Not an annual event for most sailors but a bucket-list race for sure.

Regular club racing

Royal Victoria Yacht Club, Canadian Forces Sailing Association, and other local clubs run regular Wednesday evening and weekend series throughout the spring and summer. Great way to get into racing if you haven't tried it.

If you're new to racing and want to crew, check club notice boards or ask around at the marina. Boats are always looking for crew.

For spectators

Swiftsure start is the best spectator event — hundreds of boats leaving Victoria Harbour at once is impressive. Dallas Road cliffs and Clover Point give good vantage points. Or grab a spot at Ogden Point.

If you're watching from a powerboat, stay well clear of the racing fleet. Know where the course marks are and give racers room. They have right of way.

Getting your boat race-ready

A clean hull makes a real difference in race performance. Even light growth can cost you minutes over a long course. If you're racing, get your hull cleaned a few days before the event, not weeks. We offer special deals for racing teams and groups — get in touch and we'll work something out.
