Swiftsure: Victoria's Biggest Yacht Race
Everything you need to know about the Swiftsure International Yacht Race — the highlight of Victoria's sailing calendar.
Swiftsure is the race that puts Victoria on the sailing map every year. It's been running since 1930 and it draws boats from all over the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
The courses
There are several courses to suit different boats and experience levels. The full Swiftsure course heads out past the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Swiftsure Bank — open ocean sailing. The shorter courses stay in the strait. There's also the inshore race for smaller boats and those who want to stay closer to home.
The challenge is the mix of conditions — you can have flat calm in the morning and 25 knots by afternoon. The currents in the strait are no joke either. It rewards smart sailing over raw speed.
Preparing your boat
Race prep starts below the waterline. A clean hull is non-negotiable if you want to be competitive. Heavy barnacle growth on race day is like dragging a parachute.
Check your zincs, running gear, and through-hulls before the race. The last thing you want is a mechanical issue when you're committed to a course offshore.
Safety gear requirements are strict for Swiftsure and the organizers do inspections. Make sure your safety equipment is current and you've done a crew safety briefing.
The party
Let's be real — the after-race festivities are half the appeal. The harbour is full of race boats, the yacht club is buzzing, and the stories are flowing. It's one of the best weekends of the year in Victoria whether you race or not.
