Marina vs Mooring Ball vs Anchor: Pros and Cons in Victoria

· By Daniel Garcia

Trying to decide where to keep your boat in Victoria? Here's a straightforward comparison of your options.

Where you keep your boat changes maintenance, cost, and how often you actually use it. Victoria, three ways:

Marina slip

Pros: Shore power, water, easy access to your boat, security, social scene. Most convenient option by far. Step on, go sailing, step off.

Cons: Expensive — Victoria marina rates aren't cheap and waitlists can be long. Shore power can increase zinc consumption due to stray currents. Some marinas have warmer water that grows more fouling.

Best for: People who want to use their boat regularly with minimal hassle.

Mooring ball

Pros: Usually cheaper than a marina slip. Your boat swings freely, which can mean less fouling on one side. More of a "real boating" feel.

Cons: Need a dinghy to get to your boat. No shore power or water. Mooring tackle needs regular inspection — chains wear, shackles corrode, and your mooring needs to be sized right for your boat and the weather.

Best for: Experienced boat owners who don't mind the dinghy commute and want lower monthly costs.

Anchoring

Pros: Free (with some restrictions on duration depending on location). Total freedom to move.

Cons: Not practical as a permanent solution in Victoria — time limits apply in most popular anchorages. You need good ground tackle and need to be confident in your anchoring. Weather watching becomes a way of life.

Best for: Cruisers and liveaboards with experience. Not ideal as a daily-use option.

Hull maintenance differences

Marina boats often need more frequent zinc changes due to electrical currents from shore power systems. Mooring ball boats can get uneven growth depending on how they sit in the current. All options need regular hull cleaning.
