About Maple Bay Marina.
Maple Bay Marina sits inside Maple Bay on the east coast of Vancouver Island, north of Cowichan Bay and south of Ladysmith. It's a major cruising base - many long-distance cruisers and live-aboards call it home, and it has one of the bigger boat populations north of Sidney.
The bay is sheltered but has good exchange through Sansum Narrows to the north and the open waters of Stuart Channel. Water temperature is slightly cooler than Cowichan Bay's sheltered waters and saltier - fouling pressure is moderate.
Many boats at Maple Bay stay long-term and see modest annual use. That means zinc and growth issues can accumulate if not monitored. We see a lot of pre-season commissioning work and pre-sale inspections.
What Diving Looks Like at Maple Bay
What diving here is actually like.
Typical visibility is 10-15 feet - quite good for the mid-island. Good conditions for video inspection work.
Fouling is moderate. Regular-use boats need 6-8 week cleaning. Boats used infrequently can stretch to 10 weeks but then have more intense growth to remove each time.
Mooring-ball fleet in the bay needs annual inspection - especially boats that stay on the mooring year-round.
